“I adore this series.”
I adore this series. One Dark Window completely pulled me into the mist-locked kingdom of Blunder, and Two Twisted Crowns made it one of my all-time favorites.
The relationship between Elspeth and the Nightmare made me feel two things at once, terrified for her and weirdly understanding of why she clings to him. Their connection reflects how people can depend on the darker parts of themselves even when it’s damaging. Having to fight for your own mind again and again made these books feel personal.
The Providence Card magic system is one of the most interesting I’ve read in a while. I liked how closely it ties desire to consequence, and how the internal and external conflicts stay tangled together.
The atmosphere is incredible. It’s misty, oppressive, lyrical, and vivid. Rachel Gillig’s writing has a fairytale rhythm that turns sinister before you fully notice it. These books read like poetry and still move fast when they need to.
I also loved the slow burn romance. It’s not spicy, and I didn’t miss that at all because the emotional tension is enough. It takes its time without taking over the main conflict.
When I finished Two Twisted Crowns, I just sat there with that heavy, quiet feeling. I can’t fully explain why this series hits me the way it does, but it does.
