“Alex Volkov is cold, controlled, and sharp around the edges, and Ava Chen feels like warmth and light without being naive.”

Alex Volkov is cold, controlled, and sharp around the edges, and Ava Chen feels like warmth and light without being naive. On paper they shouldn’t work, but somehow they do, even when I was thinking this was a terrible idea and still wanting them together.

The forbidden aspect really hits. Alex watching over Ava while her brother is away creates constant tension, and their push-pull dynamic is addictive. It’s dark, possessive, and intense.

Some parts did go a little over the top for me with aspects that felt more soap opera than a grounded romance, and a few big emotional moments leaned too hard on dramatic gestures instead of the deeper healing these two probably needed. The pacing wobbled near the end, and the wrap-up felt a little too neat for characters carrying that much damage.

It’s not flawless, but it still got under my skin anyway.
