“The Games Gods Play by Abigail Owen surprised me in the best way.”
The Games Gods Play by Abigail Owen surprised me in the best way. I went in expecting something fun and maybe a little fluffy, but it turned into a story with real bite and a lot more heart than I anticipated.
Lyra Keres, cursed by Zeus to be unlovable, gets pulled into the Crucible, a brutal competition where the gods choose mortals to fight for the right to rule Olympus. Lyra ends up as Hades’ champion, which is as messy and fascinating as it sounds. Lyra doesn’t feel like a cookie-cutter chosen one. No, she’s capable and sarcastic, which make her easy to root for.
The push and pull between Lyra and Hades had me fully locked in, especially because the story doesn’t ignore the power imbalance between them. Their trust feels earned, and the relationship builds in a way that made me want to keep reading “just one more chapter” until I ran out of chapters.
The supporting cast has that found-family vibe I love, and everyone feels distinct rather than filler. The political maneuvering created a strong pace while giving depth to the world-building.
If you’re into mythology with a modern edge and romance this one’s absolutely worth picking up.
