“From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L.”

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout was my gateway into fantasy. I started it convinced fantasy wasn’t my thing. It always felt too unreal, too far removed from anything I could actually connect with. Then I met Poppy, and she made that world feel reachable.
She can be so naive at times I wanted to shake her, but that also works because you’re learning right alongside her. Watching her grow from someone boxed in by rules and expectations into someone who starts choosing herself was what hooked me.

The characters around her are a huge part of why I got so attached. They don’t feel like filler or plot devices. Casteel, Kieran, Vikter, Tawny. There’s a found-family feeling that builds naturally, rooted in respect, loyalty, and that sense that they’ve been through it together. It made the story hit harder because I actually cared about what happened to them.

The politics kept me locked in because every time I thought I understood what was going on, something shifted. The romance starts out under questionable circumstances, but it grows into something intense and genuinely unbreakable. Their dynamic really worked for me.

I’ve read a ton of fantasy since then, but this one is still close to my heart. It changed the way I think about what stories can do. It proved to me that fantasy can feel personal and emotional.
