“Echoes of Us by Alex Cross hit me hard.”
Echoes of Us by Alex Cross hit me hard. It’s a raw, unflinching look at how love can get tangled up with addiction, and how the person you care about most can end up being the one you hurt the worst. It’s painful and messy, but there’s still this thin thread of hope running through it.
The story follows Atticus and Noah through Atticus’s POV, and it really pulls you into everything he’s feeling: the love, the confusion, the excuses you make for someone you’re trying to hold onto, and then the heartbreak when it all finally collapses. Noah is magnetic and full of life, which somehow makes it even more brutal watching addiction swallow him up and take Atticus down with him. The way the book shows codependency, manipulation, and the constant lying felt disturbingly real.
I did struggle a bit at first with the timeline jumps between their early “before” days and the “after,” when they reconnect two years later. It made me slow down and pay closer attention. But by the end I really appreciated this format.
This isn’t a light or easy romance. It’s heavy, emotional, and at times genuinely heartbreaking, but it also feels important. If you want a college MM second-chance story that doesn’t shy away from addiction and the fallout it causes, this one will stick with you.
