“Boyfriend Material feels like Alexis Hall showing off that they've got jokes.”

Boyfriend Material feels like Alexis Hall showing off that they've got jokes. The banter is unreal, and I genuinely laughed out loud more than once watching two absolute disasters try to pull off a “transactional” relationship without catching feelings.

Luc is pure chaos, scrambling to clean up his image when his estranged rock star dad barges back into his life. Oliver is a tightly wound barrister who just needs a perfectly respectable date for a family event. They could not be more opposite, and I loved going along for the ride with them. They’re both bruised in their own ways, and it was satisfying to see them slowly claw their way toward something healthier together.

I’ll be honest, Oliver wasn’t always easy to like. His strict rules and judgmental streak drove me up the wall at times. But somehow he still kept pulling me back in. Luc is the kind of character who hides behind jokes so you don’t notice how much he’s actually feeling until it’s too late. Watching him realize he wasn’t just pretending anymore was such a highlight. His vulnerability sneaks up on you, and once it does, it hits.

One of my favorite parts was the found family vibe. Luc’s friends aren’t just background noise. Priya and Bridget in particular added so much, and I loved how they kept Luc grounded and called him out when he was being an idiot. The contrast between Luc’s messy, eccentric world and Oliver’s buttoned-up, conventional life creates so much great comedy.

It did sag a bit in the middle, and I caught myself thinking, just talk to each other already. Still, I was entertained the whole time. The emotional honesty surprised me in the best way. You show up for the sarcasm and the ridiculous setup, and then suddenly you’re stuck feeling things because the character growth is real. Hall threads the needle between playful roasting and genuine tenderness.
