I waited to read Blood of Hercules until right before Book 2 drops, and honestly, that was one of my best reading decisions.

Jasmine Mas pulls you in fast. The story drops mythology into a post-apocalyptic world and makes it feel natural. Alexis Hert is the reason the book works so well. She’s sharp and stubborn with a wit that is deeply entertaining. She is clearly carrying a lot, and the book never treats her trauma like decoration. Watching her fight her way through the Spartan War Academy, through politics designed to crush her stayed interesting the whole time because every new mess she survives changes how you see her.

The relationships are messy in the best way. Kharon and Augustus aren’t easy to root for, and that’s exactly why they’re interesting. The forced betrothal adds constant tension, and the power dynamics never feel simple. Nobody gets smoothed out to seem more likable, and I loved that.

Patro and Achilles, the Crimson Duo, bring a different kind of intensity. Their bond is fierce, tangled, and kind of unstoppable, and adding Alexis to that orbit makes the whole relationship web addictive to read. Nyx, Alexis’s snarky invisible purple echidna companion, was also a perfect shot of humor when things got too bleak.

This book goes dark. It leans into the cruelty and the politics, but the pacing kept me flying through chapters. The world-building feels rich without becoming a slog, and the secrets, especially around Alexis and the quiet questions around Charlie, kept pulling me forward. By the end, Book 2 didn’t feel optional. It felt necessary.
